ABSTRACT

This chapter provides perspectives and guidelines for the evaluation of mental health programs designed and implemented within the context of a sport organization. First, the chapter expresses a rationale for why it is important to evaluate mental health programs in sport organizations, including what is meant by mental health program evaluation. Second, it explains the nature and scope of a mental health program and offers examples describing mental health programs for athletes that would qualify as candidates for program evaluation. Third, the chapter discusses how coaches, support staff, and administrators can participate in the program evaluation process. Fourth, it gives guidelines regarding how to evaluate mental health programs intended to foster the mental health of athletes, coaches, and staff. Fifth, as part of the guidelines, the chapter details seven steps to take for the formulation and use of a mental health program evaluation plan. Finally, practitioner exercises conclude the chapter.
