      ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the preparation required to successfully support children with additional vocabulary learning needs. It covers in-class support and how that works in tandem with the group intervention and home support. Many educators will be aware that vocabulary is an issue for their students and so will take the path of identifying at-risk children and giving them a boost via a short-term vocabulary group intervention outside of the classroom. The classroom naturally provides a rich context for word learning. The word learning environment of the classroom has the potential to overwhelm vulnerable word learners. The focus of the support plan should be the classroom. The main focus of the group intervention is to pre-teach words to children that they will be exposed to in class. The words are sourced from the whole class curriculum, established in the group and then the learning is built upon in richer, more natural settings.
