The teacher used the ‘Whole class vocabulary planning sheet’ to identify key words to teach. The teacher also writes a simple definition that all the children will be able to understand. If children attend a group where they learn words and they receive no further support for vocabulary learning they are unlikely to make significant progress. Vulnerable word learners need access to: whole class teaching of vocabulary and extra strategies to support vulnerable word learners. Word games are used at the start of each group to focus the children on learning about words as well as building their word learning skills. The assessment of word learning skills looks at all the basic skills that are covered in the word learning skills section in the group.
