ABSTRACT

Because authors of biofiction name the protagonist after an actual historical figure, many have assumed that these creative writers are doing a form of biography or history. Through my discussion of a few biographical novels, I show that biofiction is, first and foremost, fiction, and not biography or history. I then clarify why readers need to see the biographical subject of the fictional work as separate and distinct from the actual historical personage. I conclude by indicating what I intend to accomplish in this book.
