ABSTRACT

Teachers in further education, whether full-time or part-time, may be subdivided, on the basis of their qualifications, into graduates and non-graduates. Many of the graduates teaching full-time in further education will have come direct from university, with or without teacher training, and others will have come in from industry or commerce. Full-time teachers in major establishments of further education, other than county agricultural colleges which have their own salary scales and grades, may also be graded according to the standard of work they are undertaking. In terms of the standard of the courses being offered, a teacher teaching non-advanced courses in a College of Further Education may fairly be compared with his equivalent in a secondary school. The sandwich and supplementary courses together comprise ‘in-service training’, that is, teacher training after the date of appointment to a post in further education. The seven polytechnics engaged in teacher training established a Standing Conference of Heads of Departments of Education in Polytechnics.
