ABSTRACT

In November 1969, there were more than three million students attending courses in further education establishments. Students living outside the local authority area in which the college of their choice is situated must usually obtain a permit from their own local education authority before they can be accepted. The polytechnics and larger colleges virtually all have student unions which are represented on the National Union of Students. In colleges with a great majority of part-time students, the concern may well be that of establishing a student union in the first place. The social and athletic facilities which further education establishments provide for their students vary enormously from college to college and from authority to authority, but very rarely do they measure up to those available in universities and colleges of education. Overseas students make up a significant proportion of the student body in further education, being particularly numerous in the London area.
