ABSTRACT

This chapter examines those differences in detail and also to give an account of the growth of further education in Wales in the period since the war. In November 1970 responsibility for primary and secondary education in Wales was transferred to the Secretary of State for Wales and the Education Office for Wales became the Welsh Education Office. One of the most interesting developments in further education in Wales in recent years has been the establishment, in 1964, of the College of Librarianship, in Aberystwyth. In the meantime, the responsibility for the education and professional training of teachers in Wales rests, as it has for many years, with the University of Wales. The growing number of teachers in further education in Wales is reflected in the decision a few years ago of the Association of Teachers in Technical Institutions to establish a separate division called ‘The Wales Division’.
