ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with research into further education—whether undertaken by universities and colleges of education, by further education establishments and Regional Advisory Councils, or by national organizations of various kinds. In 1959, the Crowther Report added its voice to the growing demand for educational research by stating: ‘In view of the very large sums of money that are spent on education every year, the expenditure on educational research can only be regarded as pitiable. One of the few research-oriented units in further education is the Centre for Institutional Studies set up in 1970 at the North-East London Polytechnic under Tyrell Burgess, John Pratt and Pam Lewis. The National Foundation for Educational Research exists to conduct empirical objective studies of broad practical significance to the improvement of education and to disseminate widely in the national education system the results of its own and others’ research.
