ABSTRACT

The administration of further education differs significantly from the other sectors of our educational system in one very important respect, namely the degree of co-ordination which is to be found at the regional level. The former consisted of all vocationally oriented provision, while the latter consisted of broadly non-vocational education and was subdivided into three parts: the Youth Service, Recreational Facilities and Liberal Adult Education. In formulating policy, the Secretary of State relies on a number of National Advisory Councils of which the most important in further education is that on Education for Industry and Commerce. The Local Education Authorities is, of course, very largely responsible for providing, staffing and equipping the institutions in which further education is carried out. The industrial and trade organizations are also influential in further education. Examinations understandably have an all-pervading influence in further education where the majority of them are set by national and regional Examining Bodies.
