ABSTRACT

The White Paper provisionally recommended the establishment of 28 polytechnics, to which 2 more were added in the following year. The nomenclature of some of these establishments is both haphazard and confusing as their titles were often determined locally at different periods of time. The courses which the institutions offer depend very largely on their geographical location and the availability, or otherwise, of courses offered by other accessible establishments. The National Colleges originally consisted of a small group of establishments designed to serve the whole country in respect of one industry or group of industries. The evening institutes are by far the most numerous of the further education establishments: in 1970, there were about 6,500 of them, nearly ten times as many as the major establishments. The former College which has residential accommodation for 100 students is near to the National Institute of Agricultural Engineering, a research establishment financed by the Agricultural Research Council.
