ABSTRACT

Courses, which are designed to provide a liberal education in art, provide for study in one of four areas of specialization: fine art, graphic design, three-dimensional design, including industrial design, and textiles/fashion. For the most part, education for art and design is provided in the majority of polytechnics and in 130 separate establishments known by various names, of which the most common are Colleges of Art and Design, Colleges of Art, and Schools of Art. In addition, the Minister should give up direct responsibility for art examinations, the Intermediate Certificate should be abolished and, perhaps most important, a new and independent council should be set up to survey the whole field of art education, including the awarding of the new diploma. Courses in music which are available in further education establishments fall into three main categories: full-time courses in music, music as part of liberal studies, and part-time courses in music.
