ABSTRACT

The OODA Loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) was created by Air Force Colonel John Boyd, a military strategist who used it for combat operations. Although he never wrote a book about the process, his OODA Loop was held in high regard within the military. Over time, the OODA loop has been applied to many disciplines beyond the battlefield, including business. The OODA Loop essentially describes making choices, which has a lot in common with the art of improvisation. In the face of an uncertain and unscripted future, improvisation is a mode of decision making that is instantaneous and taps into emotion as much as it does reason. “Facilitation brings together a unique combination of mostly powerful people who are used to getting their way,” Jonathan said. “They get in a situation and they can’t get their minds around listening or understanding other people. They don’t know how to cooperate.”.
