ABSTRACT

People and organizations who are on the offensive are defining themselves rather than having others define them or, perhaps worst of all, settling for no definition whatsoever. One’s perspective is largely determined by whether one’s locus of control is internal or external. The power of realizing a vision by expressing it to others. The power of assembling a coalition. The power of inspiring people through music, images, and rhetoric and mobilizing a political force. The power to create something of consequence, something greater than the sum of its parts. Ganz explains, “Leadership is accepting responsibility to create conditions that enable others to achieve shared purpose in the face of uncertainty.” He continues, “Leaders accept responsibility not only for their individual part of the work, but also for the collective whole. Empathy is an easy concept to understand theoretically, but it is much harder to practice in the real world.
