ABSTRACT

One theory contends that when humans were just beginning to stand on two feet, communication was limited to grunts and growls. People could only express basic emotions like love and approval or threaten violence and with little subtlety. They mostly expressed what they felt with little emotional control, similar to what people see today on certain social media accounts. Language evolved and written language was developed along with the domestication of plants and animals, when people accrued excess agricultural goods to trade with others. The recording of human thought was a game changer for humanity. In earlier times, oral communication was the key to power. Even today, people read the speeches of the Roman philosopher and politician Cicero to improve their own command of language. People unknowingly operate according to what communications theorists call Display Rules: culturally prescribed norms that govern how people express themselves and socialize.
