ABSTRACT

The relationship between strengthening of labour standards and global trade was already a challenge for the creators of the Treaty of Versailles. The aim of the book is to re-identify opportunities to improve the regulation of global processes towards achieving economic growth, social progress and the protection of workers' rights. A recent change in circumstances will have an impact on solutions proposed in this book, for example, related to the need of concluding free trade agreements. From a historical point of view, the linkage between labour standards and global trade has been recurrent for 200 years and it is crucial to clearly present conceptual underpinnings which stand behind the nexus. Moreover, the book explores the newest US-Mexico-Canada Agreement and argues that it can be regarded as a new model agreement and that its quick implementation can be a chance to alleviate economic depression and create a framework for economic growth.
