ABSTRACT

Aiming to review related theories on migrant children’s educational choices in compulsory education stage, this chapter applies Buchmann and Hannum’s education supply and demand theory (2001), Education and stratification in developing countries: A review of theories and research. Annual Review of Sociology, 27, 77–102, to lay a foundation for the theoretical framework. Then it constructs a financial investment intergovernmental game model for migrant children’s compulsory education based on rudimentary financial principles. Lastly this book utilizes household education decision models to establish the theoretical model for migrant children’s needs. The review helps establish an insufficient supply model evaluating the government and public schools’ input. Meanwhile it constructs an insufficient demand model to analyze migrant children’s educational demand based on family educational decision models. The combined supply model and demand model set up the theoretical framework for this particular research.
