ABSTRACT
This chapter provides insight into the alternative institutions established by Palestinian prisoners over time, which proved integral to direct resistance actions. Such institutions included a democratically elected political body, a communal financial system, a rigorous education curriculum, and an extensive communications network. The chapter describes how and why these institutions developed both within and between different prisons, and how the counterorder influenced broader organizing and activism.
