ABSTRACT

The distinguishing feature of performative slackers is that they use slacking to show off. For them, slacking is a means to elevate their social status. These performative slackers include the disingenuous slacker, the posh slacker, and the recalcitrant slacker. Empathetic slackers do not feel the need to impress their peers, nor do they feel the pressure to conform. Rather, they pretend to be slackers as a way to show solidarity. “United we slack” is their motto. Faux slackers typically wear their slackness on their sleeves. They advertise their slackness because they want to appear effortless and nonchalant. Like self-flagellating slackers, faux slackers may very well be high-achieving individuals. Not all slackers lie about their efforts. Some of them really do manage to do well without working hard for it. Instead of faking slackness, these lucky slackers flaunt it. The faux slacker and the disingenuous slacker both want to appear effortless.
