ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to acquaint the reader with the philosophy of logotherapy. Closely linked to existential theory, logotherapy was developed by Holocaust survivor Dr. Viktor Frankl, who was committed to the notion that meaning is paramount to existence. The author discusses Western existential philosophy before elaborating on Frankl's construct of logotherapy. Logotherapy asserts that humans have the unique ability to find meaning in any circumstance. Once found, that meaning makes life worth living. The author ties the concept of finding meaning to her research on Holocaust art, suggesting that art making led Holocaust victims to find meaning, thus contributing to psychic survival.
