ABSTRACT

The psychology tutor had read the material in front of him, looked at the booklist attached and pondered. Many of the books on the list were required reading for his first-year students, with some for the second and third-year students. APEL poses no difficulty for straightforward admission. All degree regulations whether for universities, polytechnics or colleges include clauses which are intended to enable applicants without whatever may be the formal education requirements cited to be admitted. During the last ten years of steady developmental work, it has become evident that there is a series of variables which largely determine the characteristic features of any APEL scheme. Learning contracts for employees therefore demonstrate that without leaving the employers’ premises, employees who are prepared to do some work in their own time have three sources of potential academic credit in their hands; a negotiated learning programme, the assessment of experiential learning and in-house courses of education and training.
