ABSTRACT

Almost all parents let their young children look at themselves in the mirror asking them what they were seeing. Or they are too impatient to wait for the answer and tell them: ‘Look, that is…’, calling out the name of the child. The same happens with pictures and videos on smartphones nowadays. At some point, the young child will call out its name when seeing itself like this. The parents are happy and believe that their child is showing self-awareness. But what does this awareness actually constitute?
