ABSTRACT
Malthus’s views on the redistribution of wealth add an extra dimension to his views on overpopulation; poverty and misery can occur even if there is no population pressure, and prudential restraint is not the only remedy. The case for greater economic equality is often put forward on humanitarian or social justice grounds. Malthus’s contribution provides an intellectual justification that is logical and coherent.
