ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the basic issues that confront writers and editors. The rewriting of films in the editing room is discussed. Case studies from such films as Lost Horizon, Apocalypse Now, and First Man illustrate these concepts. Included is a quote from Schindler’s List writer Steven Zaillian about where to start a movie. Script examples from prominent scripts, such as Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri and Jojo Rabbit, highlight writers’ approaches that reflect the editing process. The significant rewrite of the beginning of Apocalypse Now is contrasted with the film’s original script. The concept of screenwriting as a story told in images is explored.
