ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a look at how production footage (“the dailies”) grows out of the script during production. It discusses the different types of coverage and some differences between digital and photochemical film, along with the latest protocol for digital dailies. Shot design and the emotional impact of shot size are reviewed, along with the concept of continuity editing. A case is made for the primacy of rhythm-based structure in building a scene. Permutations of the script, including the creation of the lined script and subsequent use as an organizing medium in the editing room, are highlighted.
