ABSTRACT

What are the principles that all good editors know? How can an understanding of editing rhythms, genre expectations, intercutting, subtext, and structure inform the writing process? This chapter discusses the relationship between film editing and screenwriting. It refers to techniques that originated with the Russian film school of Eisenstein, Kuleshov, and Vertov. Attention is given to how writers sculpt a story and how the editing process contributes to the final rewrite. The importance of tone is examined. Examples of tonal shifts during post production include script excepts from King Richard and Power of the Dog.
