ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter outlines the therapeutic impulse behind creating a manualized model for therapeutic theatre in working with individuals in recovery. The authors recount their individual and collaborative expertise as background to developing CoActive Therapeutic Theatre (CoATT) for making plays with treatment facilities that include eating disorder treatment centers, substance use rehabilitation facilities, and outpatient medical recovery centers. Manualized therapeutic theatre is essential when considering the development of an evidence-based treatment.
