ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient satisfaction with their doctors’ communication performance across six domains of relational communication (nonverbal immediacy, doctor–patient similarity, receptivity, composure, interactional formality, and conversational dominance) and global satisfaction with the medical encounter. Sixty-nine patients completed the 14-item Relational Communication Scale (Burgoon et al., 1987). The results show greater patient satisfaction with doctors’ communication in TCM than in WM encounters. The results also indicate that patient satisfaction with the medical encounter could be predicted by their satisfaction with doctors’ relational communication.
