ABSTRACT

The chapter begins by making the argument that helping couples is a challenging task due to the complexity of intimate relationships. However, therapists have access to a wealth of knowledge on how to build a successful relationship, particularly with advances in research and empirically supported treatments. Using the 7 Cs framework described in this book can help therapists organize this knowledge in an effective way. To be successful in treatment, therapists need to conduct a proper assessment of couples, which is the focus of this book. Using the 7 Cs will help therapists develop a thorough understanding of how a couple functions in several important areas. The chapter then introduces the reader to each of the Cs, which include communication, conflict resolution, culture, commitment, caring, contract, and character. A potential 8th C can be added to the framework for couples with children.
