ABSTRACT

Individual attributes of both partners can be both an asset and a liability when it comes to relationships. The chapter explores various elements of character that should be included in an assessment. It begins by examining how personality features can impact relationships, such as being a source of perpetual problems. It describes two possible frameworks for viewing personality, the Big Five and the Myers-Briggs. The second section encourages the therapist to assess for possible emotional sensitivities partners may be bringing into the relationship. These emotional sensitivities are often a result of past negative experiences from an individual’s family of origin or previous intimate relationships. The third section addresses the importance of attending to physical and mental illness within individuals, as well as their impact upon the couple’s relationship. The chapter concludes with a section that encourages therapists to also identify areas of strengths.
