ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how assessment informs therapy beyond the initial sessions. The first section focuses on how to take the information collected during assessment to develop a treatment approach. For example, the chapter explores the advantages and disadvantages of being a purist in following a model or using an integrative approach. If the therapist chooses an integrative approach, the chapter outlines ways this might be done. If the therapist chooses to work from primarily one model, various considerations for how to choose a model are described. The second section discusses how to use the 7 Cs as a framework for organizing and presenting feedback to a couple, including tips on how to do this most effectively. The third section reminds the therapist that assessment never truly ends. This section examines the various ways that therapists can assess if treatment is being successful, including if a couple may be ready for termination. It also outlines various questions the therapist can use to evaluate why therapy may not be adequately progressing.
