ABSTRACT

In this chapter, as the authors travel off with Joe Barsden on a Black whale expedition on the brig Active to Van Diemen's Land in May 1813, they again will have the opportunity to test out the historicity and veracity of his memoirs, apart from engaging with him in some intriguing transnational journeys, which even today are highly attractive: the Furneaux Islands and Van Diemen's Land's Port Dalrymple and Tamar River/kanamaluka. Barsden offers an insightful and discerning insight into the geographic and social aspects of Hobart and southern Van Diemen's Land, although not without blemishes. In search of the historicity and veracity of the Barsden memoirs through the chapter, the authors travelled off with Joe Barsden on the first of his transnational ventures on a Black whaling expedition on the brig Active to Van Diemen's Land in May 1813 to the Furneaux Islands and Van Diemen's Land's Port Dalrymple and Tamar River/kanamaluka.
