ABSTRACT

This chapter with a historiography of general Pacific Island history. Barsden's recorded experiences on reaching the North Island of New Zealand, the North Cape of New Zealand and Bay of Island provide an opportunity to assess the historicity and veracity of two significant historical events: the Boyd massacre, and later when he received the greatest of hospitality from all the Bretheren of the Church Missionary Society Mission. It concludes with a consideration of the winds of change of geopolitical power, sweeping over traditional Tahiti with Pomare II's victory. The winds of change, however, were about to lash the historians' domain, beginning in the 1980s. The Endeavour made directly for the North Island of New Zealand. Today, it usually refers to a causal relationship with nature through exploring beaches, usually by retired folk.
