ABSTRACT

This chapter examines post-2000 support practice and considers whether and how practice that supports adults with learning disabilities to use technology has changed. A positive risk-taking framework is used to explore what characterises present support practice. Analysis suggests that a support practice that prioritises enabling adults with learning disabilities to access and use technologies comprises four key components: creativity, risk management, shared decision-making and resilience and that these components of practice can be encouraged and facilitated by supportive environments, particularly managers. Risk management also needs to be understood more broadly than managing the risk that technology use might harm people with learning disabilities in some way.
