ABSTRACT

The focus of this chapter is technologies that have been designed and developed for adults with learning disabilities since 2000. In particular, the factors that are driving what technologies are being designed and how they are being designed are examined. From this examination, three key issues for design practice emerge: (1) designing for hope or fear, (2) designing for everyone or designing for difference and (3) designing for user involvement. The implications for future design practice is considered, particularly the importance of applying learning disability relevant design principles and implementing design processes that enable people with learning disabilities to meaningfully influence the design of new technologies.
