ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 presents how Covid-19 affected societal trends in relation to ten domains of practice, and their implications for promoting or disrupting sustainable lifestyles. Three situations are identified. Evolving trends that were accelerated by the pandemic expand to affect more sectors of the population in deeper ways, for example, digitalization and mindful consumerism. The virus outbreak also halted or reversed ongoing trends, which decelerated, such as the sharing economy. Lastly, public health emergency measures generated some unanticipated developments, which are likely to become permanent. Unanticipated changes included the role of the home, the concept of wellbeing, and forms of citizen engagement.

This chapter is mainly written from a Brazilian perspective.
