This chapter focuses on responses to the challenges and opportunities for systemic transitions toward sustainability. China was the first country that coped with the virus outbreak through a countrywide lockdown measures and returned to normal social and economic activities. Economic recovery was its current priority, but it faced a dramatically changed world environment. The chapter discusses how this opportunity could be harnessed to promote green growth, high-quality development, sustainable lifestyles, and low-carbon transitions. It presents major policy instruments deployed in China at the local and national levels with claims to contribute to a greener future, and compares these with investments in the US and the EU.
