ABSTRACT

“We need to keep asking better questions and getting better answers.” This is the voice and perspective of Dr. John. S. Antrobus. In light of his stance, this chapter is utilized as a means of expanding a worldview regarding working with dreams. The author provides an analysis of an interview conducted with Dr. Antrobus, where questions are asked in search of “better answers.” During the author’s and Antobus’s time together, they talked about dreams, mind-wandering, and sleep research, as well as the essential qualities of a good scientist – a personality structure secure enough to withstand the necessity of merging questioning with open mindedness to discover the path to advanced human knowledge. From this conversation, a relational psychoanalytic understanding reveals the significance of relationships in the development of a person. Through illumination of formative life experiences, consideration of valuable lessons provided throughout the interview process, and examination of the author’s own personal interaction with – and reactions to – Dr. Antrobus, this chapter aims to illustrate the significance of the synergistic quality of dreams and relationships.
