ABSTRACT

“Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!” This one line, spoken jocosely to the author by G. William Domhoff, supports MacDougall’s notion that Dr. Domhoff is the epitome of a relational being. An accomplished dream researcher, Domhoff has had – and continues to have – a successful career built upon dreams, the sociology of power, and most importantly, relationships. Domhoff’s connections have been formative not only in his own life, but in the lives of others as well. His embodiment of those who mean most to him transfers to interactions he has with others – something MacDougall was fortunate enough to experience throughout their 3-hour conversation. This chapter is a result of that conversation and includes questions pertaining to Domhoff’s professional journey and a recounting of significant historical events that were important for his professional development. This is followed by a relational psychoanalytic exploration of phenomenon unfolding in the here-and-now of the interaction, as well as the intersubjective space created because of, and through, dreams. This chapter emphasizes the indissoluble nature of dreams and relationships, and how this symbiotic marvel creates meaning and changes lives.
