ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 lays out the critical-theoretical framework of the book and how the filmic stare is used to analyze primary film texts throughout the rest of the book. This chapter demonstrates the breadth of applicability of the filmic stare by using both early modern and non-early modern film examples. The filmic stare as a new critical-theoretical framework is significant because it creates a critical lens through which to analyze disability in film without sacrificing a film studies approach predicated upon formal analysis.
