ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we investigate the use of Twitter for administering advice in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. We will review the work on analyses of Twitter as both a broadcast and an interactive medium for health promotion purposes. We discuss some of the ethical considerations involved in working with online data, establishing principles that will also apply to forms of (offline) communication discussed in subsequent chapters. Working with tweets posted from official state health departments from governments across the Anglosphere (U.K., U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand), we investigate different strategies for advice-giving through speech act analysis.
