ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a curriculum framework for the 6th-, 7th-, 8th-, and 9th-grade students to learn how to continue the physical literacy journey to Milestone 3, “making intentional physical activity choices to continue and sustain my physically active life.” The goal is to delineate a need to embrace a personalized, lifelong view for curriculum development. The chapter starts with a description and analysis of the developmental characteristics of adolescents who are growing rapidly in cognitive, physical, and emotional dimensions. The discussion of the Enduring (life) dimension argues for including motivation as part of the knowledge content to address the ever-declining motivation for physical activity in this population. In the following section about the Transient (immediate physical activity needs) dimension, the emphasis is placed on teaching decision making about physical activity choices. In the subsequent content focus and learning tasks sections, specific motivation constructs of interest and perceived competence are discussed as viable candidates for content integration. The chapter ends with two research-tested curriculum frameworks as examples of the curriculum conceptualization.
