ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a concise reiteration of the major tenets of the previous chapters and recaps the urgent need for innovative ways to conceptualize the physical education curriculum. The goal is to highlight the opportunities that have come with the crisis physical education is facing. It begins with a question raised by Collins (2017), “Why is the school curriculum full of stuff adults never use?” It then discusses the traditional sport-centered content as a source of the crisis. The analysis of the crisis leads to the realization of the consensus about physical literacy as an opportunity for curriculum reform. The factors we can rely on for the reform are articulated to reiterate the notion that future physical education must be based on the life-course perspective and the knowledge-centered approach to curriculum. The articulations are followed by reiterating Michael Young’s idea of disciplinary science as the content core and the need for a paradigm change. The chapter ends with an emphasis on the need for a sense of urgency to act now.
