ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents the Battle of Dumlupinar Survey team's observations from the ground. He seeks to illustrate the past and present-day relationships between the material cultures/landscapes of the Battle of Dumlupinar and the local communities of the conflict zone: Looting – who is looting what and why? Spiritual beliefs – how did folklore/spiritual beliefs appear or mobilise in relation to the war and its landscapes? Politics – how did battle events become elements of local politics? Social relations – what is the role of war in determining the relationships between different communities and villages? Looting or, treasure hunting as the locals call it, is one of the key aspects of the local populace's complex relationship with the landscapes and material culture of the conflict. The legacy of the Battle of Dumlupinar holds a significant place in today's local politics.
