ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the social construction of corporate wrongdoing in Hollywood films. Utilizing the social construction perspective, the chapter examines narratives revolving around corporate wrongdoing. Typologies were developed revolving around the protagonist, antagonist, and victim. The protagonist is an essential character in corporate wrongdoing films, usually depicted as a Whistleblower, Legal Crusader, Rabble-Rouser, or Activist. The depiction of the antagonist features the narratives such as the Mustache Twirler, Deception and Denial, Dirty Tactics, and Greed. Victims of corporate wrongdoing are rarely depicted in films. However, when shown, the narratives include Sickness and Disease, and Exploitation and Oppression. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how films can transform collective consciousness toward corporate wrongdoing.
