ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 starts by strolling through the campus of a Small Private College (SPC), which intentionally welcomes pregnant and parenting college students. Efforts to be inclusive, supportive, and protective of this population are evident throughout the campus’s grounds and website, as discussed in the subsequent case study. Through rhetorical criticism of the textual and visual messages that SPC publicly presents, the authors argue that practicing genuine hospitality toward pregnant and parenting students is a path to compliance with Title IX. Rhetorical analyses of commonplace discourse, constitutive rhetoric, and inclusive messages, supported with communication theory, collectively paint a picture of a reality that exists on this campus and could exist at other universities. Areas of continued growth, including the need for more clarification of policies and resources, are discussed in light of the need for all schools to continually evaluate how they can improve and better support pregnant and parenting students.
