ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 opens with the story of Carla, a student who experienced miscarriage, pregnancy, and parenting while in college. Her story personifies the under-support that pregnant and parenting students face and illustrates the necessity of delving into this problem. To lay the foundation for such research, the authors present the history of Title IX, beginning with the legal and societal landscape that necessitated the passing of Title IX, the origins of the law, and a review of important legal precedents. This chapter provides readers with a thorough understanding of the Title IX compliance structure and how the law is enforced.

The authors begin by providing basic foundational legal knowledge, including an explanation of legal hierarchy and how legal arguments are constructed, to prepare readers for a legal analysis of cases brought by pregnant and parenting students. The authors then provide extensive legal research, accessible explanations, and all needed knowledge of Title IX compliance requirements for pregnant and parenting students. This includes statutes, regulations, guidance, and a thorough review of relevant case law. Because inequities and injustices remain, the authors present their guiding argument, research questions, and methodology, and preview the remaining chapters of the book.
