ABSTRACT

The Introduction to the Case Studies briefly transitions readers from the first half of the book, which presents generalizations about pregnant and parenting students across US universities of higher education, to the second half of the book, which focuses on three specific schools, their communication, and their students. The authors outline the methodology they use to conduct student interviews, to collect each school’s textual and visual communication on pregnancy and parenting, and to analyze these messages. The authors explain how this mixed-methods research process—involving qualitative research, rhetorical criticism, and massive amounts of data—helps reveal truths, explain persuasive effects, and identify ethical concerns of the schools’ public communication and apparent compliance with Title IX.
