ABSTRACT
This chapter seeks to re-establish social work's radical roots alongside its reformist practices. It explores social work's historical roots and examines the major influences that have shaped modern social work. The chapter aims to convey the complex nature of social work and the ways in which it is contested – that is, there are often conflicting views of what it is or what it should be.
