ABSTRACT

New digital technologies, including AI, have indeed emerged and transformed the incumbent media. The driving forces of this change are diverse, and they include the digitization of all forms of text, speech, image, and sound; the convergence of new media and popular culture; the increasing ubiquity of digital networks; and people’s changing cultural habits. This chapter discusses the ways in which AI has transformed customers, as several digital platforms supported by AI, such as social media platforms, over-the-top service platforms, and music streaming service platforms, connect production and consumption. It is vital to examine whether users in the realm of digital platforms are empowered by the growth of AI and AI-equipped digital platforms. The chapter then addresses the personalization of popular culture as one of the most important characteristics in the AI era. It finally discusses the transformational force of AI in consumption in order to better understand the impacts of AI in contemporary digital society.
