ABSTRACT

Several studies in the field of AI journalism focused on the relationship between AI-supported automated journalism and human journalists, analyzing the impact of AI on the jobs in journalism. Unlike these studies, this chapter maps out the implications of AI and algorithms in the realm of journalism, which must be foregrounded in the larger context of the digitization of media—a transition toward algorithms and social media. It examines the ways in which AI and big data have reshaped journalism as an institution. By raising the question of what AI does mean for journalism, the chapter discusses how AI and big data have transformed the journalism landscape. It also investigates the ways in which social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok, as some of the most significant social media and news platforms, produce and disseminate fake news. In so doing, the chapter critically examines the increasing role of AI in producing news culture and its effects in journalism.
